MUD The Musical

MUD The Musical, a play that tells a story of Kuala Lumpur's past.

MUD The Musical, a play that tells a story of Kuala Lumpur’s past.

If you love stage plays or performances and if you love Broadway type shows, MUD The Musical is one you do not want to miss. MUD The Musical is a play that shares a historical tale of Kuala Lumpur’s dramatic past in song and dance, that made Kuala Lumpur into what it is today.

Recently, Tourism Malaysia Kuala Lumpur together with Gaya Travel organized an event called #AboutKL that encompasses media folks from Malaysia, Singapore, and Indonesia. One of the venues we visited is the Bandaraya Theatre (Panggung Bandaraya) and had the pleasure of watching this lovely musical. This here is my rendition of it.

MUD The Musical, a Broadway type of musical.

I love staged plays with song and dance, Of an air charged with dramatic romance, That turns macho men to cotton candy, Oh how I love MUD The Musical, A Broadway performance so whimsical, Sharing a tale of Kuala Lumpur’s rough history.

It all started back in 1880, During the boom of this great country, That this story of Kuala Lumpur unfolds. It was the strength of its economy, Flourishing in a place quite muddy, That attracted quite a few households.

Malaysia was then called Malaya,
And there was Mamat, Meng and Muthiah,
Friends who came to this frontier town.
It was jobs that they were after,
And Kuala Lumpur was the answer,
But still they had to search around.

Mamak, the mobile tea stall proprietor.

Mamak, the mobile tea stall proprietor.

Meng met a tin mine owner,
Who soon became his employer,
While having tea at Mamak’s tea stall.
Muthiah received a job offer,
From Mamak the tea stall proprietor,
But on someone’s promised, he gambled it all.

Mamat showed up in his bicycle,
Which was then a luxury vehicle,
That made Meng and Muthiah drool.
A government job was desirable,
A job Mamat found enjoyable,
And it made him look pretty cool.

The good old times.

The good old times.

Everything went well,
Kuala Lumpur was swell,
It was a time of joy and laughter.
Love was in the air.
There was music everywhere,
Mamat even became a father.

Fires burning down Kuala Lumpur, a tragic time in its history.

Fires burning down Kuala Lumpur, a tragic time in its history.

Soon things took a turn,
Disasters struck.
There came flood and fire.
The little town burnt,
Times were dark,
What an emotional rollercoaster.

Mamat's wife and his baby during the disasters.

Mamat’s wife and his baby during the disasters.

Being down and out,
Like zombies they wandered about.
Life in Kuala Lumpur seemed over.
But then in times of darkness,
Out came real fighters,
Whom disaster have made stronger.

The citizens of Kuala Lumpur standing strong making a vow to rebuild their town.

The citizens of Kuala Lumpur standing strong making a vow to rebuild their town.

It was the best of three friends,
Whom had again joint hands,
And vowed to rebuild their once beautiful town.
It was their never give up attitude,
And a camaraderie of brotherhood,
That made Kuala Lumpur into this bejewelled crown.

MUD The Musical, a must watch.

MUD The Musical, a must watch.

Just look at Kuala Lumpur today,
A place once swept away,
Now a city so exceptional.
There’s a lot more to this story,
So pack up your family, And come watch MUD The Musical.
